Get Dirty

If hiking the trails at Ghost Ranch and perusing the museums aren’t hands-on enough for you, consider signing up for a course through the Ghost Ranch Education Center, which offers reasonably priced (about $300 a week) one- and two-week classes throughout the year.

Paleontology courses take participants into the field to work alongside graduate students and professionals in the Hayden Quarry and in the lab, cleaning and preparing fossils. Other courses focus on geology or archaeology, including visits to petroglyph sites and ancient pueblos in the backcountry around Ghost Ranch. One summer course — Dinosaurs, Fossils and Fun! — is aimed specifically at dino-crazy kids.

And if a week or two just won’t cut it, consider signing up for the month-long Triassic Park course in January.
