A Ph.D. in geology or a related field is desirable, but applicants with MS degrees, particularly with significant professional experience, will also be considered. Candidates will be evaluated based on their potential for being effective teachers and student mentors. Teaching responsibilities are nominally 3 courses per semester for the academic year and some departmental service in support of the undergraduate programs, for example, assessment. Candidates should possess sufficient educational background and experience to teach our large-lecture course in physical geology. Those candidates with expertise in depositional systems, structural geology, geomorphology, and environmental geology are especially desirable. Teaching opportunities potentially exist for the summer semester. We also value candidates with expertise that would allow them to become involved in research and field activities.
Michigan Tech has a total student population of about 6,300 and is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a pristine area on the south shore of Lake Superior. The department is committed to a strong educational focus and values basic and applied interdisciplinary research. Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered in Geology, Geological Engineering and Applied Geophysics. Interested candidates can learn more about the department programs, courses, and research and find contact information for faculty at http://www.geo.mtu.edu.
Only electronic applications will be accepted, preferably, as a single, complete pdf file that includes a cover letter outlining the applicant’s interest in and qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, and teaching statement (philosophy and interests).
