The College of Charleston Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences (www.cofc.edu/~geology) is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in August 2010. We are looking for a Geoscientist who uses GIS and remote sensing in their research and teaching programs, and who is committed to undergraduate education and research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory geology, GIS and remote sensing classes, and to develop one or more courses related to their field of specialty. S(he) will also be expected to involve undergraduate students in their research program.

Preference will be given to those with teaching experience at the college level and demonstrated research potential. An expertise in GIS and remote sensing is essential. The successful candidate is expected to develop his/her own research program and to seek external funds. The teaching load is three courses (nine contact hours) per semester, including undergraduate and graduate-level courses. A Ph.D. is required at the time of employment. Salary is dependent upon experience.

The Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences has over 100 majors and offers a major, a minor, and a broad array of topical and interdisciplinary elective courses in the geosciences. The Department provides graduate-level courses in the multidisciplinary Environmental Studies Master of Science program and the M.Ed. in Science and Mathematics. Collaborative opportunities are available with well-established faculty research programs including: aqueous geochemistry, coastal processes, environmental geology, geospatial sciences, hydrogeology, marine geology, natural hazards, paleontology, sedimentary petrology, seismology, and tectonics. The Department’s GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratories are a part of the Lowcountry Hazard Center that is located in a newly constructed science building.

This position supports geologists by providing geographic information system (GIS) services and database management support. The employee provides interim GIS products to the geologists and then uses existing procedures and scripts to create GIS products from their work. The Bureau of Economic Geology, a large energy and environmental research unit in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin, is seeking an Associate Director (AD) for its Environmental Systems group to provide program development, project coordination, and group management to the environmental staff. The associate director will serve as part of a small, integrated senior administrative team at the Bureau. The AD will create and pursue a vision of multidisciplinary environmental research, focused on Texas, but with a global reach. The AD will work with Principal Investigators to identify and develop sources of funding for existing and new multidisciplinary programs, particularly in the areas of sustainable water resources, coastal geology, natural hazards, geothermal energy, subsurface storage, and geologic mapping.

Required is a Ph.D. degree, with major course work in the field of Earth Science, along with a minimum of 12 years’ experience, or an M.S. degree with 17 years’ experience, preferably in a field related to the Bureau’s core areas of environmental research— hydrogeology, coastal studies, near-surface and airborne geophysics, geological hazards, carbon sequestration and geological mapping. Additional requirements include excellent management and organizational abilities and previous experience as a successful leader of major research programs. We are seeking a team player with a proven record of research and leadership, together with a demonstrated ability to attract external funding from a variety of sources (such as Federal and State agencies, industry, and foundations). The Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), a research institute of Indiana University, seeks applications for a position in subsurface geology to conduct applied research related to the character and potential of reservoirs and seal systems to be used for carbon sequestration. This position initiates and will conduct collaborative research on this subject in cooperation with ongoing projects associated with the two DOE Regional Partnerships in the Midwestern region and other projects. The particular emphasis of the position is on determining how well particular reservoirs and seals will perform and assessing the interactivities of the injected fluid with the rocks and ambient fluids. The Department of Geology & Geophysics at Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in reflection seismology beginning September 2010. The position is offered at the Assistant Professor level.

The successful applicant will establish an active, innovative research program while complementing current departmental strengths in petroleum geology and geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and structural geology and will participate actively in the newly established Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems. The Geology Department at St. Lawrence University seeks an individual with expertise in Structural Geology and Petrology or Mineralogy to fill a Visiting Assistant Professor position that is potentially renewable for up to a maximum of three years.

We are a small, high quality, undergraduate program that emphasizes both field and laboratory aspects of the science. Our students are commonly involved with faculty in research and the nearby Adirondack Mountains, Canadian Shield, and St. Lawrence Valley offer rich opportunities for study. University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Department of Geology, seeks full-time, tenure-track assistant or associate professor starting September 1, 2010.
