Clues for March 2009:

1. The U-shaped valley seen here in this national park was formed by a glacier that shares the namesake of the National Hockey League championship trophy.

2. The park is part of several contiguous mountainous parks that have been collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Just outside the park’s southwestern entrance is a small town named for the radioactivity responsible for heating the town’s famed hot springs.

Answer: This valley, formed by the Stanley Glacier (named after Lord Stanley, once governor-general of Canada), is in Kootenay National Park, in British Columbia, Canada. The park and several contiguous Rocky Mountain parks were collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Just outside the park’s southwestern entrance is the small town of Radium Hot Springs, named for the radioactivity responsible for heating the town’s famed hot springs. Photo is by Jim Ferguson.
