RESEARCH GEOLOGIST (SIMS)

The U.S. Geological Survey, Geology Discipline Laboratory Program, invites applications for the position of Research Geologist, specializing in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS). The position is for a USGS staff scientist at the USGS-Stanford ion microprobe laboratory at Stanford University. The laboratory conducts research in U-Th-Pb and U-Th geochronology, and in microanalysis of trace element concentrations and isotope ratios in solid materials using the SHRIMP-RG (Sensitive High Resolution Ion MicroProbe - Reverse Geometry; http://shrimprg.stanford.edu) jointly owned and operated with Stanford University. The staff scientist will provide research support for visiting USGS scientists and conduct research independently, and in collaboration with other scientists, on USGS projects. Laboratory duties will entail working with USGS and Stanford University personnel to: (1) prepare and characterize samples for SIMS analysis; (2) tune and operate the SHRIMP-RG; (3) interpret and archive SIMS results; (4) develop calibration standards and analytical methods; (5) troubleshoot problems, perform routine maintenance, and implement upgrades to instrument software or hardware; and (6) maintain laboratory records. Research-related responsibilities will include: (1) defining, executing, and publishing SIMS-related investigations that are expected to significantly impact earth science and USGS programs; (2) working with laboratory users to assist them in publishing scientific articles; (3) presenting research results at scientific conferences and representing the USGS-Stanford laboratory in these venues; and (4) participating in scientific and technical planning for the laboratory. Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) and a background in geological sciences with emphasis in mass spectrometry and application of analytical chemistry to problems in geochronology, geochemistry, geology, or environmental science, have published papers in peer-reviewed journals, and have demonstrated skill in written and verbal communication in English.
